Redirecting your mail
New Zealand Post's Redirection service is the easy way to make sure your mail follows you when you move home or business or change your postal address.
You can redirect your mail to almost anywhere in New Zealand and overseas - permanently or temporarily.
For a permanent move, you can have your mail redirected for 2, 4, 6 or 12 months. For a temporary move, we'll redirect your mail until you return to your old address.
Redirection service coming online
In mid October New Zealand Post will be launching its online version of Redirecting your mail. More information will be available shortly.
How to apply:
To apply for your Redirection service:
- Complete an Application to Redirect Mail form (available at your local PostShop) and take it to your local PostShop at least three working days before you want the Redirection service to start.
- You can order a redirection form to be sent to your address.
- Make sure you take some identification with you (either your passport, Driver licence, HANZ 18+ card, Super card/Super Gold card, or Community services card)
- If you're applying on behalf of a business, take a letter on the business's letterhead that states you are authorised to redirect mail on the business's behalf.
Once we've processed your application, we'll write to you confirming that your mail will be redirected.

Mail we can't redirect
- ParcelPost™ Tracked and CourierPost items
- Mail addressed to only selected individuals at collective addresses (eg. hotel, motel, house of residence, hostel, hospital, hospice, rest home, public institution or club)
- Mail that has insufficient information (e.g. mail addressed to Mr J Smith when on the redirection form you have only listed mail to be redirected for Mr John Smith). Make sure you include all variations of the names being redirected.
- Mail that cannot be distinguished from other mail addressed to a similar name (e.g. initials and surname) at the same old address
- Mail addressed to two or more people but the redirection form does not include all those names
- Part of the mail addressed to a PO Box or Private Bag (e.g. all mail must be redirected)
- Mail delivered by other postal operators
- Mail delivered by international postal operators that are not NZ Post
- Mail from an overseas address to a New Zealand address
- Newspapers and unaddressed mail.
If you have a street address AND a PO Box address
Each Redirection service is from ONE old address to ONE new address. If you want to redirect mail from both a street address and a PO Box address, you'll need to complete two applications, one redirection service application for the street address and one redirection service application for the PO Box redirection - and pay the appropriate service fees for each application.
If there are more than six names involved
If you want to redirect mail for more than six names, put the additional names on a second application form and attach it to your original. No additional Redirection service fee will be incurred for attaching additional names to your application.
If your mail is in joint names
You need to list all the names at your old address that need mail redirected. If you don't list all the names in your application, their mail won't be redirected to their new address but will still go to the old address.
If your mail is addressed to two or more people at your old address and
- Each person at your old address is redirecting their mail but to different new addresses; or
- Your redirection form only details one or some of those names;
That mail will be returned to sender.
To change or cancel your Redirection service
Please complete an 'Application to Amend Redirection' (available at your local PostShop) if you want to change the details of your Redirection service (such as the start date, address details or names) extend or cancel it. You need to list all the names at your old address that need a change in direction or that need to be cancelled. If you don't list all the names in your application, their mail redirection will not be changed or cancelled. Take the form (and some identification - either your passport, driver licence, HANZ 18+ card, Community Services card, Super card or Super Gold card) to a PostShop at least three working days before you want the changes to take effect.
When your Redirection expires
If you have a permanent Redirection service, we'll write to you three weeks before it's due to expire and offer you an extension. You can request us to redirect your mail for an extension period of 2, 4, 6 or 12 months. Additional fees apply. If you choose not to extend your Redirection service or if your Redirection service is temporary, any mail addressed to your old address will be delivered to that old address once your redirection has expired.
We recommend you tell people and organisations your new address so they can update their records, this is made easier by our Change My Address service. Free change of address cards are available at your local PostShop.
